Interconnect Malta: North Africa PMC
Interconnect Malta is responsible for developing and implementing energy infrastructure projects that strengthen the island’s electricity interconnectivity and reduce Malta’s energy isolation. Its work includes the interconnectors between Sicily and Malta, offshore renewable energy projects, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
For this project, we were tasked with creating the branding for a Preliminary Market Consultation (PMC) for a proposed subsea cable link that would enable Malta to import green energy from North Africa.
At the heart of the visual identity are four symbols representing the key elements of renewable energy, arranged within a modular grid. This system allows the elements to be used individually or combined horizontally, vertically and as a repeating pattern, giving the identity flexibility across different applications.
The colour palette further reinforces the concept, with deep blue representing the sea — a natural barrier that historically separated Malta from its neighbours, but which is now becoming a means of connection through Interconnect Malta’s work. The remaining colours draw from the four renewable energy elements, creating a visual language that feels both energetic and purposeful.
The modular icons can also be combined to create more expressive compositions. Most notably an abstract representation of Malta and North Africa, with a sea of interconnected symbols between them. This visual reinforces the project's central idea: using renewable energy infrastructure to transform the Mediterranean from a dividing space into a connection between countries.
Overall, the identity translates a complex infrastructure project into a flexible and approachable visual system, communicating connection, sustainability and Malta’s role in the future of renewable energy.
